So happy to read that these two very important people stayed in your life. Allies and friends are so important. They were definitely 2 of my favorites in your book.
So glad you make it possible for readers/followers to get updates on your successes. I continue to be inspired by your book. What a fine mind and resilience you have maintained through years of fighting your own battle with the "justice" system. And the hope you gave to your fellow prisoners. Will continue tobfollow your story.
This is a wonderful update. Mr. Mack and Mr. Hartsuyker sound like wonderful people. I love your book - it's inspired me as an attorney of 25 years in California. I love your updates and when you publish paperwork from your trials/appeals and of trials/appeals of the people you helped!
They are - I wish all kids who needed help had people like them to reach out to. Thank you for sharing that about your experience reading the book and my newsletter. I'll be sure to share more cases I worked on in the posts to come!
Thank you for asking, that's amazing. My Light of Justice Program runs out of the Jesuit Social Research Institute at Loyola University New Orleans. Thank you. Your post has made me stop and think, remember, reflect, smile and lament the people I have lost on this road. When you mentioned your locker box I looked around my cell at some of the images that give me strength to keep going.
Years ago a friend from inside named Carl, painted me a copy of a famous Dutch painter named "The Gold Finch" and the back he wrote, "for my friend, because he is my friend."
I never got to tell him what his painting has meant to me and later he was moved out of state. But everyday I look at the little goldfinch on his perch with the chain around his little foot and think, "one day, my friend, you will once again spread your little wings and fly."
Thanks for the encouragement. I'm only familiar with your story through your interview with Terry Gross and and some of the commentary online that has been forwarded to me. I would very much like to read your book. Is it possible to receive a copy? I'm sure you receive lots of requests for publicity copies, but it never hurts to ask.
Unfortunately, the NMDOC has taken the position that all publishers (magazines, books, and newspapers) are drug smugglers and rejects all publications outside the limited selection of the vendor BooksNThings. All books have to be sent through a mail processing center where they can be scanned and then read on my tablet. My family helps me with this task. If you do have a copy, I'll provide you with a mailing address.
One of the things I'm interested to learn about is the way in which you overcame the "finality" hurdle with the courts. As my petition is now pending, I have little doubt that the court will sidestep having to address my claims with some claptrap about finality. Like you, it took me nearly twenty years to acquire my trial transcripts. And now that I finally possess the ammunition to properly attack my wrongful conviction the courts are reticent to hear what I have to say.
As you can see I'm pushing for amicus support because in every other instance where I've asked for review from the NMSC, the court has never addressed anything, which is why I'm thinking that maybe amicus support would make the difference.

That's a powerful image, my friend. Thank you for sharing. Even though Carl was moved away, I am glad a piece of him stayed with you in that painting.
