Congratulations, Calvin! I'm SO PROUD to say that we worked together on The Row, and I learned so much from you - I became a better person working the hospital wards (R.E. Barrow Treatment Center) under your guidance, and just watching you. Thank you for the life lessons on doing right!

It was destiny at work all the time to bring you to this part...purpose! God is the greatest recycler of human failure the world will ever know.

Calvin, Your Sojourn, I would very much like to read your book, I also write on Substack and hope that you would follow me back and read some of my articles regarding my Wrongful conviction. Calvin Duncan Sub: Your Sojourn

Good day! You don't know me, but I'm currently incarcerated in New Mexico on wrongful convictions of murder and armed robbery on a case from 2004. I write a newsletter on Substack (www.mariochavez.substack.com) where I bring attention to my case, especially because it's a case with so many obvious anomalies and errors. I just read the transcript from your 7/14 interview with Terry Gross of "Fresh Air" and I immediately knew that I needed to reach out to you.

What struck me about your interview is the challenges you faced with addressing your records. I faced the exact same challenge here in New Mexico. For years I attempted to get copies of my records (trial transcripts, mostly) only to be referred to retired court reporters who tried to peddle public records to me. As being indigent, I motioned the trial court for free access but was denied without comment. Even with attorneys I couldn't get the records.

The DOC in New Mexico isn't like Angola, in that, for decades the DOC has pursued a minimalist approach to law libraries and "jailhouse lawyering" is prohibited by policy. In 2019, I thought there was a a strong possibility in getting my case overturned, but some rather weird anomalies occurred and in that moment I knew that the only way to prevail was to put the Bible down and start focussing more on the law. But, without law libraries, the challenge was apparent. Last year, however, the DOC gave us tablets with law libraries. I soon discovered the Inspection of Public Records Act and began making inquiries. It finally took a Writ of Mandamus but I got the records.

I would very much like to interview you. My readers would enjoy hearing about your success, and it could help with your book. Please let me know if you're interested.

Thanks

Mario Chávez

I have been listening to your book on my long commute home from the office, where I’m a criminal defense paralegal in the Tampa Bay Area in Florida. I’m in the early 2000’s now. I am blown away by your strength and perseverance to keep fighting for justice through the court systems that are difficult enough for anyone pro se to navigate, but doing that from inside prison is just incredible. Hearing about your prison legal team is really inspiring. To see that you’ve gone on to continue to help others is such a blessing to the innocent, and a selfless sacrifice. I’m trying to find some volunteer work, preferably to help the innocent. I can do paralegal work-research, pleadings, and have some experience in investigative work. If there’s any way I can help, or you have any leads, please reach out! Lisadt0508@gmail.com.

Thank you so much for listening to the audiobook and sharing your thoughts here, Lisa! It means a lot to me to know that my story has had an impact and it means even more to know when it inspires people to reach out and help others. I know there is an innocence project in Florida, I wonder if they could use your help?
